JACK SR. AWARD
Jack Atcheson Sr. was recently awarded with Outdoor Life’s year 2000 Conservation Award in the individual achievement category. Jack Sr. was selected from a list of worthy candidates nominated by the Outdoor Life Conservation Fund Advisory Board. The award recognized Jack Sr.’s many efforts on behalf of sportsmen's issues worldwide, in particular his efforts as the president of the Montana Coalition for State Lands Access, which sued the State of Montana for prohibiting hunting on state lands. The 14-year battle opened up 5.2 million acres of land to the general public plus an additional 2 million in Federal lands that had been blocked by those state lands. Atcheson was also heavily involved in Montana’s open streams to public access laws, allowing the public to travel within the high water marks of Montana’s waterways. Atcheson served as an Ad-Hoc member of the Wolf Re-introduction Program after demanding that a sportsman's voice be heard in the recovery efforts of wolf in the northern Rockies, along with countless other smaller projects involving critical big game ranges, over grazing, excessive logging, and mining - many efforts that have helped wildlife and sportsman. The Outdoor Life Conservation Award was established by Outdoor Life Magazine in 1923. Past winners have included such notables as Aldo Leopold, President Jimmy Carter, John Encole, Congressman John Tanner, and Chief Michael Dombeck of the U.S. Forest Service.
